MONDAY, JUNE 4

 

7PM • DROP-IN WORKSHOP

Join us for a 45 minute no-experience necessary drop-in workshop taught by PREACH! Just $7.

8PM • SIXTY IN 60

60 improvisers - broken into 6 teams of 10 - have just ten minutes each to attempt a classic improv format in a venue that is almost at capacity before we've sold a single ticket.

9:30PM • BLIND DATE SEMI-FORMAL

A COMBUSTIONfestival tradition, performers don their snazziest duds and wait in excited anticipation of being called to the stage... often meeting their scene partners for the first time right there in front of the audience before performing their scenes. 

11PM • OPENING NIGHT PARTY

Get a drink at the Bad Dog bar and hang out with us! We'll be busting it all out to welcome our out-of-town guests with a dance party dj'd by Winnipeg's DJ Mama Cutsworth.

8PM • DOSSIER PROJECT

Canadian Comedy Award winner Sean Tabares directs this original unscripted comedy full of intrigue, mischief and secret motives featuring a cast of local favourites and visiting guests

9:30PM • THE SKULLZ & PALS + LITTLE MOUNTAIN IMPROV

Toronto supergroup The Skullz invites you to be a part of an extremely hilarious secret society. Join them - and their visiting festival guests - as they perform their very, very exclusive rituals and ceremonies and also a lot of improvised comedy.

Little Mountain Improv are back for their second year at COMBUSTION! They're bringing the west coast charm with one of their innovative show formats.

8PM • DREAMS COME TRU + PREMIERE

Hannah Spear & RobYn Slade reunite for a duo set eight years after their COMBUSTIONfestival debuts as members of the cross-country Tumbleweed Project... dreams really do come tru!

Directed by Nicole Passmore, Premiere is a brand new play, improvised right before your eyes. Not only are the scenes improvised, so are the props, costumes, set, music... EVERYTHING. Watch as our "stage manager" and cast create the opening and closing night of the funniest play you'll see... and never see again. Featuring a mix of local favourites and international festival guests as well as live, improvised underscoring by DJ Mama Cutsworth.

9:30PM • CASUALLY DOPE + MAGNET TOUR CO.

Casually Dope come to us for the first time from Baltimore. They're expert short-form players that are sure to knock your socks off.  Then Magnet Tour Co's Elana Fishbein, Megan Gray, and Bianca Casusol create a world of weird characters, interweaving scenes with whiplash precision.

7PM • THE BEAT: A MUSICAL IMPROV SHOWDOWN

Gauravi Shah's musical improv showdown pits two teams of performers against each other in a spontaneous, melodic battle for the audience's laughs - winner of Bad Dog's 2018 Test Drive festival of new formats. JUST $5!

8PM • MAGNET TOUR CO. + ONE LIONS

New York's Magnet Tour Co hit the stage showing us what the best of the big apple looks like.

One Lions present Waiting for [Blank] – the Best of the Fest winner at the 2016 Vancouver International Improv Festival. Accompanied by an improvised musical score, and some super-secret guest appearances. 

9:30PM • DOPPELGÄNGER VIDEO PROJECT

In this COMBUSTIONfestival classic - we pair up improvisers, sending half of them out in small teams during the day to shoot unfinished improvised cliffhanger scenes that must be completed live, onstage by their doppelgängers - who only get to see the videos for the first time, along with the rest of the audience, right before they hit the stage.


FRIDAY, JUNE 8

7PM •  MATCHMAKER

Curated with maximum delight in mind, witness one-time-only pairings of local improvisers and international guests in this hilarious hour of unscripted duos. JUST $5!

8PM • HAROLD • ONE LIONS

Philly Improv Theater's Kristen Schier directs this all-star festival ensemble in one of the best-known improv formats in the world, underscored live on the turntables by Winnipeg's DJ Mama Cutsworth!

What if Samuel Beckett wrote his absurdist masterpiece Waiting for Godot on the back of a cocktail napkin an hour before showtime? What if he cast two knuckleheaded improvisors instead of real actors? This should give you some sense of what to expect when Calgary's One Lions presents Waiting for [Blank].


9:30PM • PREACH + HOOKUP

PREACH! combines spoken word and longform improvisation and is your new favourite Chicago troupe.

Want to know what it would be like to date that charming stranger sitting next to you? Bad Dog's smash hit HOOKUP takes the lives, likes and dislikes, turn-ons and turn-offs of two random audience members and turns them into a fully improvised romantic comedy. Paul Bates directs this festival presentation featuring a mix of original cast members and international guests.

11PM • THE PARTY SHOW

Improv inspired by party stories. EVERYONE has one. What's YOURS? Featuring: Matt Folliott, Coko Galore, Kyah Green, Tom Hearn, Daphney Joseph, Kirsten Rasmussen and international festival guests including Winnipeg's world-renowned DJ Mama Cutsworth.

7PM • THE KWEENDOM + BDFP & FRIENDS

Directed by Nelu Handa, The Kweendom is an improv comedy troupe of ethnic women making you laugh. They are the improv house team at Yas Kween and are joined by Brooke Montoya (Chicago), Ese Atawo (Vancouver) & Blue Cavell-Allette (Baltimore) for this special festival collaboration.

The Bad Dog Featured Players welcome international festival guests to the Early Show - serving up a scintillating mix of personal stories and hilarious scenes.

8PM • THEATRESPORTS 

Two-time Canadian Screen Award winning star of Kim's Convenience, Andrew Phung, hosts this special festival edition of Toronto's longest running comedy showdown - featuring visiting teams of improvisers from Calgary, New York and Chicago.

9:30PM • LITTLE MOUNTAIN IMPROV + CASUALLY DOPE

Little Mountain Improv was voted Favourite Guest Improviser(s) by Bad Dog audiences for a reason: they're great. Huge energy, whimsical characters, these folks follow the fun. Casually Dope satisfies with big laughs and whip-smart commentary in their last showcase of the fest!
