SUBMISSION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 6, 2017 - 11:59pm EST
When: Monday, November 20 - 4:30-7:30pm
Where: Bad Dog Comedy Theatre (875 Bloor St. W. - upstairs)
What: Bad Dog is excited to announce auditions for our fifth season of Featured Players: our resident roster of improvisers to be featured heavily in a number of shows from January-December 2018. We are looking for experienced performers who have yet to find the sort of home on our stage that they desire, and are looking to stretch their legs, gain exposure, perform more regularly with Bad Dog, have the opportunity to understudy our marquee productions as well as create an original signature show format together to be performed at the theatre. NEW THIS SEASON: we are expanding the Featured Players' development and performance opportunities with the addition of a three-month marquee Saturday-night cast residency at Bad Dog (9:30pm timeslot) following the initial six months of performance and show creation at the Early Show (7pm timeslot). We will be working with a smaller, dedicated group to create an ensemble that works seamlessly, dynamically together.
Requirements: A comfort level (or enthusiastic desire to become comfortable) with shortform and longform improvisation (both thematic & narrative); Recommended - a minimum of two years of stage experience (performing improv in front of an audience)
Weekly Shows - January to June 2018:
The Bad Dog Featured Players are the resident cast of The Early Show - our Saturday 7pm lead-in to our flagship show: Theatresports.
From January to June, the Season 5 Featured Players will work primarily with one director (Alex Tindal) with the ultimate goal of developing an original signature show format and performance approach that the cast will continue to perform in a prime performance slot in the latter half of the year. The cast will meet every Saturday from 6-7pm to rehearse together, followed by a 30-40 minute set at the Early Show where they will have the opportunity to hone their onstage chemistry as an ensemble in front of a live audience.
Early work will focus on ensemble-building and group dynamic, followed by heightened stagecraft, audience-work, narrative technique and diagnostic scenework - all building towards the eventual development and polishing of an original format. Guest directors will occasionally work with the Featured Players, with a focus on specialized skills (hosting, shortform game play, cinematic movement, etc.).
Weekly Shows - July to October 2018:
***NEW THIS SEASON*** As mentioned above, he show format developed by the Featured Players and workshopped/previewed at the Early Show from January-June will then be moved up into an ongoing weekend marquee performance slot at Bad Dog in the latter half of the year. Bad Dog will continue to present this cast and their show in a regular weekly performance slot (9:30pm on Saturday night) for 3 months.
Members of this roster of performers will be invited to workshop and understudy our professional shows (i.e. Theatresports, Toronto, I Love you, Pushpins, etc.) and when opportunities arise, will be called upon to perform in these shows alongside our resident cast and repertory players.
Development opportunities: Beyond invited rehearsals or workshops for specific shows, we will be hosting a minimum of three (free) two-hour advanced workshops exclusively for the Bad Dog Featured Players.
Commitment: We are asking for a nine-month commitment from this performer roster with an expectation of 3 performances on average per month (at 7pm on Saturdays for the first six months, moving to 9:30pm on Saturdays for the following three months) as well as participation in invited workshops and rehearsals. If you know that you are generally unavailable on these dates over the next year, please do not request an audition at this time. We will be auditioning for a new roster of performers in May 2018 (to begin the next nine-month residency in July 2018).
Auditions: We will be running 50-minute-long auditions, in the theatre (875 Bloor St W) with no more than 16 participants in each. NOT EVERYONE WILL BE ASKED TO AUDITION. All submissions will be considered, regardless of whether you are asked to audition. You will be told by November 13 if you have received an audition. If you can’t make the audition, but are still interested in being considered, please send us a resume and the contact information for two references who can speak to your experience & strengths. We will hold these auditions again in 6 months.
