“Why is it okay to say words sometimes and not others? We couldn’t be having this conversation if other people were in the room.”

Nick is a comfortable gay man and Jess is a straight tomboy, they are two best friends at the end of working the graveyard shift, and find themselves embroiled in a drunken discussion about words; their meanings, and the impact that those words have on their lives. Cut between their work environment and their debate, Jess and Nick, using dark humour (and a lot of naughty words) push the boundaries of their friendship as they question appropriate, and appropriated word use within the dynamics of society and each other.

Word Play was first produced as part of Toronto’s Gay Play Day @ the Alumnae Theatre in 2014.
