The Bad Dog Theatre Ensemble Studio Series is a 4-level professional conservatory-style program for experienced improvisers, focusing on finessing and elevating their longform and ensembling building work in Toronto.
What is it? With a strong emphasis on group mind, collective creation and teamwork, the Ensemble Studio concentrates on thematic exploration in longform improvisation (more so than it does on traditional linear narrative).
Chosen by audition, our ensemble will work together over four 7-week terms (24 weeks total) to develop a shared vocabulary of techniques which they will then apply in rehearsal and performance to both existing formats & the creation of their own original performance vehicle. The Ensemble Studio explores the unique rewards and challenges presented when improvising without external direction in a larger-cast setting (8-12 performers) as well as the type of seamless, exhilarating unscripted work that can be created when multiple individual voices combine harmoniously to make something far greater and more immersive than they could have done alone.
How does the program work?
The levels work as follows:
- Level 1: ensemble/group connectivity & scenework
- Level 2: forms and techniques
- Level 3: original show creation
How does the Ensemble Studio fit into the Academy & how does it relate to our onstage programming? The Ensemble Studio is to the type of work done by the Bad Dog Repertory Players (BDRP) what the Narrative Studio is to many of our Friday-night marquee runs (like Final Frontier, Wayward & Hook Up) and what our Shortform Studio is to our Saturday-night lineup (Theatresports & Micetro).
Who is the Ensemble Studio for? Experienced improvisers with previous stage experience.
Duration: 2.5hrs/week for 8 weeks
When is it? SPRING 2017
Price: $250 (+HST)/level
PLEASE NOTE: live performance & subsequent feedback is a key component of the Ensemble Studio. Participants must commit to availability for showcase dates at Academy Tuesday
